Water Heater Removal in San Diego

Once a plumber swaps in a new water heater, the old tank usually ends up parked by the garage door instead of riding off in their truck. We're the pickup for that leftover tank — but the gas, water and power disconnect has to happen before we arrive, since we're a haul-out crew, not a plumbing service.

  • Homeowners upgrading to a new water heater, tankless or standard.
  • Landlords and property managers swapping the tank between tenants.
  • Anyone who just had a new one installed and needs the old tank gone.

What We Take

We take

  • Standard tank water heaters, gas or electric
  • Tankless water heater units
  • Hybrid and heat-pump water heaters
  • Old tanks already disconnected and drained
  • Small-property commercial tanks

We can't take

  • Units contaminated with hazardous chemicals

Tanks need to be disconnected from gas, water and power before we arrive — we're a carry-out crew, not a plumbing service.

Same-Day and Next-Day Water Heater Removal in San Diego

Crews are already on routes through San Diego most days, so same-day pickup usually comes down to whether the tank's disconnected and ready when a slot's still open on today's route. Call in the morning for the best shot at today; otherwise next-day is the standard turnaround.

Same day
Doable when the tank's already disconnected and a crew has room left on today's route.
Next day
The most common booking — plenty of slots most weeks.
Booked ahead
Worth it if you're timing the pickup around a plumber's install date.

What Water Heater Removal Costs

Water heater pricing has less to do with landfill fees and more with the tank itself — it's heavy, and how far we have to carry it changes the job. Since the tank is mostly steel, it's headed for scrap recycling rather than the landfill once it's out of your house, which keeps the disposal side of the price fairly light.

Hookup status

A tank already disconnected from gas, water and power is a quick carry; we don't do the disconnecting ourselves.

Weight and carry distance

A full-size tank is heavy — getting it up from a basement or out of a tight closet adds labor time.

What happens after

Steel tanks are mostly scrap metal, so they're routed to a recycler rather than buried in the landfill.

A full tank is heavy, but since it's routed to scrap metal recycling instead of a landfill scale, it skips some of the weight-based tipping fees that drive up pricing on heavier, landfill-bound loads.

Water Heater Removal vs San Diego's Own Bulky Item Pickup

San Diego's Get It Done bulky pickup is free, but items go out at the curb on a scheduled day, twice a year, six per appointment — and a water heater still connected to gas or water isn't something they'll take.

Getting it to the curbWe carry it out from wherever it sits. You, or your plumber, get it to the curb yourself.

If the old tank's already disconnected, sitting at the curb, and you're not in a hurry, the city's free pickup can work — it's the wait and the DIY curb-carry that usually push people toward booking us instead.

Where Your Load Goes After Pickup in San Diego

A water heater is almost entirely steel, so once it's out of the house it's headed for a scrap recycler rather than a landfill scale — the same route most of San Diego's appliance metal takes.

Steel tank body

Scrapped and recycled — steel has real resale value at the yard.

Insulation and jacket

Stripped off before the metal goes to the scrap buyer.

Fittings and valves

Small brass and copper parts get pulled and recycled separately.

Water Heater Removal for Apartments, Condos and HOAs

Apartment closets

Narrow utility closets add carry time, especially on upper floors without an elevator.

Condo units

Buildings with a loading dock or freight elevator make the carry faster — let us know if yours has one.

Single-family garages

The easiest carry — usually a straight shot from garage to truck.

Let us know about stairs, elevators or a building's loading dock window when you book, since that changes how we plan the carry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have the water heater disconnected before you get there?

Yes — we haul it out, but we don't disconnect gas, water or electrical lines. Have a plumber or your installer leave the old tank ready to go.

Is an old water heater recyclable?

Mostly, yes. A tank is close to all steel, so it's typically routed to a scrap metal recycler instead of the landfill.

I just had a new water heater installed — can you take the old one the same week?

Usually, depending on remaining slots. Send us a photo of the old tank and we'll get you a price and a window.

What about a tankless unit?

Yes — same disconnect rule applies: gas, water and power need to be off before we arrive. Once it's down, a tankless unit is a lighter, quicker carry than a full-size tank.

Will you carry the tank out of an upstairs apartment or condo?

Yes — let us know about stairs or a building's elevator access when you book so we can plan the crew and timing.

Does San Diego's free bulky pickup take old water heaters?

It can, if the tank's fully disconnected and you're willing to wait for one of the two yearly appointments and count it against your six-item cap. We don't have that cap or the wait.
